Clark family recipe for German Chocolate Cake.
Ingredients
- 1 pkg. (4oz) Bakers German Baking Chocolate
- 1/2 c water
- 2 c flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) butter
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 c buttermilk
- 4 egg whites
- icing: 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
- icing: 1 1/2 c sugar
- icing: 3/4 c butter
- icing: 4 egg yolks,slightly beaten
- icing: 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- icing: 1 pkg (7oz) frozen coconut
- icing: 1 c chopped pecans
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350° Grease and flour thee 9 in round cake pans
- Microwave chocolate and water in large bowl on high until meltedstir
- until melted
- Mix flour,baking soda,and salt set aside.
- Beat butter and sugar in large bowl with mixer until light and
- fluffy. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture alternately
- with buttermilk, beating after each addition.
- Beat egg whites in another bowl until stiff peaks form. Gently fold
- into batter.
- Pour into pans.
- Bake 30 minutes or until done. Cool for 15 minutes before
- removing from pan.
- ICING:
- Stir milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks and vanilla in large saucepan.
- Stirring constantly, cook on med heat 12 minutes or until thickened
- and golden brown. Remove from heat.
- Add coconut and pecans. Cool and then spread on cake.
Notes
The cake is better if you make 1 1/2 recipes of the icing.
